During the bloody struggle for the existence of a united Ukraine and the defense of its independence, the national program #save a man’s limb of the International Charitable Foundation “Health of the Ukrainian People” became an indispensable partner of the state in providing assistance to war victims, namely, limb injuries.
Philanthropists have focused their efforts on helping those who cannot afford to pay for expensive and complex surgeries (military and civilians with gunshot wounds).
According to the best orthopedic traumatologists in Ukraine, the program’s experts, the expected number of possible amputations today is an impressive figure of 17,000 to 22,600.
Thanks to the program, the number of people with amputations in Ukraine will be reduced.
The national program #save a man’s limb has become a breakthrough in the treatment of wounded military and civilians with combat injuries to their arms and legs.
The program plans to perform about 15,000 surgeries over three years.
Helping the state
Only 4-25% of the needs for treatment of war traumas are covered by the state under the NHSU Medical Guarantee Program.
The Foundation “Health of the Ukrainian People” has taken a decisive step in providing the necessary support to the victims by implementing a program aimed at saving limbs and financing complex treatment.
The average cost of a saved limb ranges from 45 to 66 thousand UAH, and thanks to the philanthropists who donate every day to support the #save a man’s limb program, the Foundation manages to cover these costs.
Today, there are more than 3,000 wounded in the waiting list for surgery.
The program was launched at the end of June 2022, and since then, more than 500 limbs have been saved thanks to timely funding for complex operations.
Implants and devices: new opportunities for restoring movement
In just over a year of the program’s implementation, more than 2,000 limbs have been saved by providing external fixation devices to frontline hospitals and clinics in Ukraine.
The program employs more than 100 of Ukraine’s best orthopedic traumatologists, who, along with 800 nurses, perform difficult but essential surgical operations every day. We help to support the Medical Front not only by supplying the necessary orthopedic devices, instruments and consumables, but also by fighting medical errors. As part of the #save a man’s limb program, more than 90 lectures for doctors have been held, covering the latest treatment methods,” said Serhiy Soshynsky, President of the ICF “Health of the Ukrainian People”.
According to him, the main goal of the program, which is supported by more than 1,000 medical volunteers, is to provide surgical care to those who have suffered from complex injuries.
Orthopedic devices, implants, endoprostheses, external fixation devices, as well as bone cement, bio-glass, specific instruments and other consumables are expensive and almost impossible for ordinary people to pay for. With this in mind, the Health of the Ukrainian People Foundation appeals to conscious Ukrainians to support the program.
The Foundation actively cooperates with regional and other hospitals, where it has already managed to finance more than 260 operations worth over UAH 12,000,000.
